Make Easy Treats for Easter Brunch or Dinner

Although making homemade fudge seems difficult, it is possible to make a quick batch of microwave fudge. This recipe for peanut butter fudge is incredibly easy and affordable. The rich flavor is similar to the filling in those peanut butter cup candies.

Candy coated popcorn is another easy Easter recipe that looks impressive. I added pastel candy corn, but other Easter candies work well. Get the complete recipes here.

Make Grocery Ads Work for You

Ads have a dubious reputation for getting people to spend more money, but they can also help shoppers stay on budget. Use these simple tips to avoid common budget busters while making the grocery ads work for you.

Bundle Bargains
Ten for $10 sales and the like can wreck your budget by enticing you to buy a larger quantity. Before deciding whether to load your cart or skip the sale altogether, check to see if the store honors the sale price on smaller quantities. Unless it is some type of instant rebate or rewards deal, grocery stores usually do not require a bundled purchase.

CLOSED: Fiber One 90-Calorie Brownie Giveaway

I recently tried these new Fiber One Brownies. Seeing the "20% daily value of fiber" plastered on the front of the box doesn't scream snackalicious, but the flavors were very chocolatey and satiating as a treat. I like the chocolate fudge flavor warmed in the microwave for about 10 seconds (Transfer it to a microwave-safe dish first.) and served alongside coffee.

Here's the manufacturer description:
"With new Fiber One 90-Calorie Brownies, you can have an unbelievably satisfying and wholesome treat in two delicious flavors. The Chocolate Fudge brownies are made with chocolate-flavored chips and topped with a dark chocolate-flavored drizzle, and the Chocolate Peanut Butter variety contains peanut butter chips topped with a peanut butter drizzle."

Giveaway Closed, Congrats to Karin! Thanks to MyBlogSpark, Fiber One and General Mills, I received this selection of Fiber One treats and gear. They are generously offering the same prize package to one reader. It includes an elastic headband, jump rope, duffel bag, water bottle, brownie-size snack case, bracelet and 2 boxes of Fiber One 90-Calorie brownies.

To enter the giveaway, post a comment telling when you plan to enjoy their Fiber One 90-Calorie Brownie; as an afternoon pick-me-up or an evening indulgence. Be sure your reply includes an e-mail address or clickable Blogger profile so I can contact you if you win.

Giveaway will end on July 16, 2011 at 11:59 PM.  Winner will be chosen via random.org on July 17, 2011.   Giveaway is for US residents who are 18 and older.  Winner will have 48 hours to acknowledge a winning email from me or I will have to choose another winner.

Fiber One and General Mills provided product, information and gift pack via MyBlogSpark.

My Experience with Groupon

Groupon is getting a lot of web buzz with many speculating about the company's future and its impact on participating businesses. I read through multiple articles with inflammatory titles but none of them offered more than the author's opinions and predictions. Well, here are some of my opinions based on my experience as a customer.

Business Participation
The scuttlebutt suggests that Groupons can hurt businesses by bringing discount shoppers. I can see the potential for a company, especially service industries, to get slammed with too many customers trying redeem discounts in a short time span. However, it seems as though there are ways to avoid this problem. For example, I've noticed some Groupons are valid only for a very specific time, such as weekday lunch during a named two-week time frame.

Customer Viewpoint
I am happy with my Groupon and daily deal shopping. It is important to be selective since the sites now offer multiple deals per day. I usually try to stick with offers for businesses that are close to me and those that I know I will use.

One of the major criticisms of Groupon is its legal categorization. Should it be treated as a gift card, which are bound by laws that vary from state to state, or coupon? I have not researched the company's official policy, however, when asked, they immediately issued credit for an unused, expired voucher.

Some Groupons, including the recent Old Navy one, specify that they are worth the full value until the expiration date. At that point, they revert to the purchase price.

5 Tips for Using Groupons to Save on Everyday Purchases and Fun Splurges
I view daily deals as a win-win for businesses and customers, but both parties need to make sure a particular deal is a good fit. View this article for tips on buying Groupons.

Do You Watch 'Extreme Couponers'?

"Extreme Couponers" on TLC seemed like the kind of show that could help people find more ways to save money. But my bubble burst when I saw the show focused mostly on the extreme. It is difficult to watch the show because it is so frenzied.

I feel like "Extreme Couponers" is more about shocking viewers than "learning" something useful. Stockpiling is a great way to save money, but who wants to live in and manage a mini warehouse?

For anyone hoping for extreme savings at the cash register, I made a list of some of the most misleading myths from the show. Think twice before trying to emulate the show.

$20 Groupon for Barnes and Noble for Only $10

I jumped on the Groupon bandwagon a while back and am happy so far. The offers include a variety of services and stores, meaning a good deal is always around the corner.

The best deal I have seen recently is the $20 Groupon to Barnes and Noble for only $10. It is good both online and at store locations. Please be aware the value reverts to $10 on April 11 and read the fine print for complete details.

Of course, Barnes and Noble has books, but the store also has school supplies, toys and an expansive collection of music and movies.

Here's my referral code for Groupon. Click on Chicago and this offer is the featured deal.

Spaghetti Taco Recipe

Do you have "iCarly" fans at home? If so, they would probably love to see spaghetti tacos on their dinner plates. It is one the weird foods from the TV show, but you can use this as an opportunity to expand your child's palate.

Instead of heaping leftover spaghetti into a taco shell, prepare a nutritious batch of spaghetti using a few easy tips. Simply adding extra veggies to your usual spaghetti sauce can boost the nutritional content.

See the complete recipe for spaghetti tacos at Associated Content.

How to Save Money on Pillow Pets

Are Pillow Pets part of your child's letter to Santa this Christmas? If so, there are many ways you can save money when shopping for Pillow Pets. Buying locally is an easy way to avoid the shipping fees, around $8. CVS, Walgreens and other retailers recently advertised Pillow Pets for $19.99. Register your e-mail address with these stores to sign up for special offers, such as printable coupons.

Be careful to avoid counterfeit Pillow Pets. The fakes are made of inferior materials but comparable in price. Real Pillow Pets have soft, chenille material. Get more tips for buying Pillow Pets here.

FYI, there's a recall on Munchkin Bathtub Subs. The battery-operated toys can suction skin, leaving cuts.

Soap.com Groupon $10 for $20 Product

I purchased a Soap.com Groupon last week. I paid $10 and received a promo code worth $20. It also included free two-day shipping. I already redeemed my Groupon and am pleased with the prices and service from Soap.com.

The same deal is currently available on the Los Angeles edition of Groupon. (Your location doesn't matter because Soap.com is an online retailer.) The offer expires at midnight. This is a great deal, but it is limited to one per person. Because this is already such a great deal, Soap.com will not combine it with other promo codes. If you decide to to buy this Groupon, please use my referral link.

More About Soap.com
Soap.com is from the same people who run Diapers.com. You can mail in manufacturer coupons to save more money. The selection is similar to that of a drug store. It ranges from household essentials, such as dish soap, to health and beauty aids to nutritional products, such as Kashi and protein drinks.

The prices are reasonable. Some items are a bit higher than local stores, but the diverse selection made it easy to pick and choose bargains to make the most of my $20 code.

Why was I happy to have a sink full of dirty dishes?

*Disclaimer: This product review was based on trying
complimentary Gain product provided by P&G through My Blog Spark. Bloggers also received Walmart gift cards and t-shirts to share with their friends at their discretion. P&G does not represent or warrant the accuracy of any statements or product claims made here, nor does it expressed within this blog site.*

I have been working on recipes quite a bit over the past few days. That means lots of dirty dishes. I also photograph my creations. Although I don't like food styling, I use one set of dishes for food photography. (Regular everyday dishes tend to have wear and tear or scratches that detract from the tasty food in the photo.)

I wash my photography dishes, knives, specialty utensils and fragile dishes by hand. So, preparing, testing and photographing recipes tends to leave a good amount of dishes for me to wash. I don't mind washing dishes, but I was glad to have a sink full of dirty dishes because I received a sample of Gain dish soap from MyBlogSpark. I was working on two recipes when I received the sample bottle of Gain dish soap. They were both messy recipes, cheese fondue and a batch of fried chili pie bites with beer batter.
Gain dish soap comes in a variety of fragrances, Original (Gain), Lavender and Citrus Splash. To be honest, I was concerned about the scent. In the past, some of the more fragrant dish soaps left a lingering fragrance that would not rinse away. Thankfully, this was not a problem with Gain dish soap. It definitely has the signature scent of Gain laundry detergent, but it wasn't too strong and didn't leave a scent on the clean dishes.

Gain dish soap is still new-ish and you may not be able to find it in all stores. I recommend checking Walmart and Family Dollar stores. You can visit the I Love Gain website for additional product info.

What is donation shopping?

For me, donation shopping means purchasing products specifically to donate to a person or organization. Instead of participating in an annual food or toy drive, I purchase donation items on a regular basis.

It is possible to do this even if your budget is limited. (And you don't have to drive to tons of stores or buy 20 newspapers.) Coupons help, but are not necessary to find bargains. One simple strategy is to look for items with instant rebates or reward coupons. CVS and Walgreens both routinely offer products that are free after instant rebates. I purchase these products and use the rewards dollars to buy household necessities.

By combining coupons and instant rebates, I was able to buy everything in the photo, plus more, for approximately $4. You can learn more by reading this article, Shopping Secrets Stretch $4 to Buy $30 in Charitable Donations.

Cheetos Mighty Zingers Sample

An offer for a free sample of Cheetos Mighty Zingers is making the rounds. Visit besnackready.com to sign up for the sample and a coupon. I've seen this chips on sale quite frequently at Kroger. So, the coupon should be a nice bonus.

The Mighty Zingers are bite-size Cheetos--a big change after last year's giant Cheeto. Each bag contains two flavors of chips. It is interesting because the flavors combine to create a unique taste. Read the article, Cheetos Mighty Zinger Review, for more information.

Register with Your Favorite Companies for Big Savings

It pays to register your e-mail address with the companies you frequent! Reputable companies are usually judicious with the number of e-mails they send. For example, you may receive a seasonal update four times a year. Other companies, such as Big Lots and Office Max, send weekly news of their latest sales and specials.

I have heard some people complain that Vistaprint sends a lot of e-mails. I somewhat agree, but don't mind because the e-mails often contain offers for free products with a nominal shipping charge. While I don't really need a custom tote bag or personalized mug, I have purchased such products for fun and gifts because the price was right.

Since policies vary, take a moment to read the company's privacy policy. Most absolutely do not share, rent or sell your info in any form, but some default to register you to receive e-mails from their partner companies.

Benefits of Registration
Perks vary among retailers and brands, but my favorites are coupons and advance notice of upcoming sales. Some companies also share info about contests, new products and promos.

Pound for Pound Challenge Post Gift Card Winner!

Candie won the $30 Kroger gift card courtesy of MyBlogSpark, Kroger and General Mills! (Check your e-mail.) Thanks to everyone who entered.

There is still plenty of time to join the Pound for Pound Challenge and help yourself while supporting Feeding America. Food banks often experience a greater need during the summer months, in part because budgets are tighter due to higher gas prices and using more electricity to stay cool. With the summer break, kids no longer have the safety net of getting meals in the school cafeteria.

Feeding America serves communities across the country. They really stretch cash donations, serving seven meals for each dollar. Visit Feeding America to learn more about its efforts in your neighborhood.

McDonald's Shrek Glass Recall Refund Begins June 9

You have probably heard about the Shrek glass recall from last Friday. I was a bit disappointed because I actually like the style, weight and quality of these glasses. I am still using the set from Disney's 100th anniversary and they are in great shape despite repeated use and going through the dishwasher.

I doubt McDonald's will reissue the Shrek glasses, my ideal solution to this recall, but they finally have the refund procedure worked out. View this article, McDonald's Recall Refund Offer Not Currently Valid in Restaurants, to learn how and when you can receive a cash refund for the recalled McDonald's glassware.

I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Grilling Giveaway

I never considered using the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter spray for grilling, but it looks like a good method. The ICBINB website has tons of summer grilling recipes. I am hoping to master the grill this year - as long as the mosquitoes stay away - and plan to try some of these recipes.

If you enjoy grilling, you should check out the Spray and Grill Instant Win Game. Each day, twenty-five winners will receive a grill basket valued at $12.99. The game continues through September. Visit the ICINB website for complete details.

The Pound for Pound Challenge and $30 Gift Card Giveaway

Memorial Day unofficially marks the beginning of barbecue season. Unfortunately, all that fun food can take a toll on your waistline. Watch your weight and help local food banks by pledging to lose weight this summer.

The Kroger Co. Family of Stores, General Mills, NBC's hit TV Show "The Biggest Loser" and other key sponsors are partnering to donate up to $1,080,000 to Feeding America this year. In the Pound for Pound Challenge, Kroger will match visitors’ pledge to lose weight by donating enough money for the food bank to buy one pound of food. Sounds like a win-win situation.

The Pound for Pound Challenge website is also an extensive, FREE source of information to help support your weight loss efforts.

Are you a Glee fan? Dove has a fun instant win game that is ending soon -- June 9. The prizes include Dove hair care products, Glee CDs and DVDs. There is also a sweepstakes for the VIP Glee Treatment. The grand prize includes a trip, spending money, makeover, Dove products, a meet and greet with two Glee cast members and more.

Target Clearance: Covergirl Shineblast

These 2-packs of lipgloss were a decent deal at the regular price of $9.99, but the clearance price of $2.48 made them a great bargain. There is also a manufacturer coupon (from the May BrandSaver insert) for $2.50 off two Covergirl products. That brought my cost down to $2.46 for four lipglosses.

Target clearance is fairly spotty with products randomly located on endcaps throughout the entire store and clearance prices vary by location. If you have time, it is worth the extra effort to check around the store. I found the lipgloss in the cosmetics department.

Target Scrubbing Bubbles Deal is a Bust

Combining manufacturer and Target coupons made a great deal on select Scrubbing Bubbles products. The problem is Target did not have the Extend-A-Clean Power Sprayer or Fresh Brush 2-in-1 cleaners in stock. I quit looking after I noticed the temporary price cut price was over as well. (Target can be a dangerous store for someone meandering around in search of elusive bargains.)

Walgreens has a good deal on the Power Sprayer this week. It is on sale for $7.99 and you receive a $2 Register Reward with purchase. Combine that with the $5 coupon from a few weeks ago for a final cost of $.99.

I'm not sure of the participation dates, but Kroger has a similar deal as well. The Power Sprayer costs $8.99 and you receive a $3 catalina.

Paying $.99 is not as good as spending $3.96 and receiving a $5 Target gift card, but it is a great bargain. The Scrubbing Bubbles website currently has a printable coupon for a free refill when you buy the Power Sprayer. I'll publish a product review soon, but suffice it to say, the Power Sprayer is an excellent cleaner.

Bath and Body Works Scentegg and Victoria Secret Cinnamint Review

Bath and Body Works is constantly updating its product line. Air freshener pods, Scenteggs, are one of the latest creations. With so many air fresheners available from Glade, Febreeze, Air Wick etc. having a signature scent usually sways me to buy a specific brand. So far, Scenteggs are only available in a handful of scents and none of them are my favorites.

At an affordable $5, I decided to try the Scentegg. Here is a complete product review of the new Bath and Body Works Scentegg.

The Victoria's Secret Cinnamints mint tins look cute, but beyond that I could not find much information about them. I bought a package for review and realized they contain three different artificial sweeteners. Read the complete cinnamint review here.

Yoplait Greek Yogurt Review and Giveaway (CLOSED)

I’ve heard about Greek yogurt on Rachael Ray's show and noticed other TV foodies mention it, but it was not available at local grocery stores until recently when Yoplait added a new line of Greek yogurt.

Thanks to MyBlogSpark and Yoplait, I got to try a free sample. Yoplait Greek comes in four flavors -- plain, strawberry, blueberry and honey vanilla. I like yogurt and frequently use it as a snack and cooking ingredient. I really wanted to try the plain yogurt as a cooking ingredient, but the nearest grocery only had strawberry in stock.

The Yoplait Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt. I really liked the rich texture, but the strawberry flavor was a little flat. I added a couple of diced strawberries and it made a tasty, filling breakfast.

Visit the Yoplait website to learn more about the protein and vitamin content of this yogurt. You can also print a .30 coupon by visiting this website.

MyBlogSpark and Yoplait provided me with two Nourish Your Inner Goddess gift packs, one for review and one to give away. The pack includes two VIP coupons for a free cup of Yoplait Greek yogurt and some relaxing bath products. (Please note the coupon offer for a free cup of Yoplait Greek yogurt is not valid in some states, including California, Idaho, Louisiana, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Tennessee.)

This giveaway is closed. Thanks to everyone who entered!

How to Enter the Giveaway
Enter to win your own Nourish Your Inner Goddess gift set by filling out the entry form. The giveaway is open to entrants ages 18 and up who have a valid U.S. mailing address.

To enter, please fill in the form with your name and e-mail address. This giveaway will close midnight (central) on May14. The winner will have 72 hours to respond to my e-mail before I draw another winner. Thanks!

Pampers Deals at Walgreens

Walgreens has Pampers on special right now. Pampers jumbo packs are on sale for $8.99 this week.

Beginning April 11, there will be a Register Rewards deal on Pampers twin packs. Twin packs will be $18.99 and you will get a $4 Register Reward with purchase. (Register Rewards are a little store coupon that prints at the register. They are good on your next purchase and typically exclude the qualifying product, in this case Pampers.)
